En realidad, el reto de la educación a distancia debiera ser el mismo que el reto de la educación presencial: incrementar el nivel de calidad de la formación universitaria que se está ofreciendo a nuestros ciudadanos, a la vez que promover la investigación necesaria para seguir mejorando.

Probablemente, será necesario un trabajo conjunto con las universidades presenciales, para establecer una plataforma consensuada de criterios comunes de calidad, aunque deban ser de mínimos, para salvaguardar la idiosincrasia de cada institución. Sin embargo, la educación a distancia no puede dejar de aprovechar la oportunidad que se brinda en estos momentos de tomar la iniciativa y garantizar alternativas de formación para nuestros ciudadanos que cumplan los requisitos de rigurosidad científica y académica necesarios, a la vez que los doten de un mayor margen de actuación y respuesta a las necesidades sociales que hoy día se están planteando.
